Alumni Meeting in Freising | November 27, 2015

The 1st Alumni Meeting of the GRK 1482 took place on November 27, 2015. Initiated by the 1st generation, we were happy to welcome almost 40 former and current GRK PhD students and supervisors. Most of the former PhD fellows of the 1st generation came from far and wide, two of them even from the UK.  It was a splendid event – worthwhile the organizational effort we put into preparation! The event  focused on the exchange of all kind of information among the  participants. Great interest was paid to the career development of the former PhD students of the 1st generation.  Vivid discussions could be overheard and it was fantastic to have almost all of them together in one spot!

External GRK Workshop | November 13 - 15, 2015

For the first time the external workshop took place in an alpine hut in the Bavarian Alps. We headed to the Spitzingsee region on Friday afternoon. After a 45 min hike in surprisingly nice mid-November weather, we reached the “Obere Firstalm”, which turned out to be a splendid host for the weekend.

Our guest speaker Prof. Dr. Frans Kok, Emeritus professor Nutrition & Health (Wageningen University) opened the workshop with his lecture on Friday evening. He gave a very interesting and critical review based on his professional lifelong experience on nutritional sciences, covering political and media related aspects as well.

Throughout the weekend the PhD fellows presented their projects and hence triggered stimulating discussions. Besides the scientific focus of the workshop, the group also proofed and practiced their teamwork capability in a 4 hour outdoor event on Saturday afternoon. Even though in the beginning there was some skepticism among the participants, they managed all team challenges and returned to the evening session with smiling faces. After an eventful and life-enhancing day the chef spoiled us with a very tasty dinner.

We thank all participants for their contribution to this weekend and highly appreciate the attendance of quite a number of supervisors in the workshop. You all helped to raise the spirit of the group, which we hope will keep up all the way through this research program.

Excursion to Switzerland | March 26 - 28, 2014

The 3rd excursion of the GRK 1482 brought us to Switzerland again. This time we visited the Nestlé Institute of Health and the EPFL (École politechnique fédérale de Lausanne), both located in the heart of Lausanne.
The visit at the Nestlé Insitute of Health was mainly focused on scientific talks and discussions. The GRK PhD students were given time to present their research projects to the Nestlé staff.
At EPFL we visited the impressive labs and the phenotyping unit.

Like in 2009, we could not leave Switzerland without visiting the adorable Food Museum "Alimentarium" in Vevey, next to the beautiful Lake Geneva.

Many thanks to the DFG who provides financing to our Research Training Group. This funding allows us to organise such events for the benefit of our PhD students.

Science Camp 2013

The 1st Science Camp of the GRK took place at Kloster Seeon during the 10th and 12th May 2013,

To facilitate the process of internationalization in the scientific education of the PhD fellows, we implemented a Science Camp in the 2nd year of the PhD program. This is a new platform allowing an intense interaction with colleagues and external advisers as well as invited guest speakers and PhDs from priviliged international partners such as Wageningen University and University of Sao Paulo.

The Science Camp was organized in a way that we had 4 different sessions (Microbiota - Diet - Gut Interface - Metabolism) durting the 2 days. Each session consists of 2 Keynote speakers and in between the PhD fellows presented their projects and related posters.

This setting challenged the PhD fellows to critically reflect the status of their work while entering the final phase of their research period.

Beginning of August we had our yearly barbecue of the GRK 1482. As always - we had delicious food and inspiring discussions.

Science goes business – GRK 1482 excursion to Switzerland

On the 1st of October 2009, even before sunrise the enthusiastic GRK group set out on an excursion to Switzerland.

Our first stop was at DSM Nutritional Products Ltd. (DSM) in Kaiseraugst near Basel. DSM is one of the industrial partners of the GRK 1482 and a world leading supplier of vitamins, carotenoids and other fine chemicals to the food, feed and cosmetic industry. Although due to time restraints, we were only able to spend a few hours there, it certainly provided us with a very good insight of R&D approaches being employed by DSM in order to bring about innovation in their products and also their marketing strategies for health ingredients. The visit of the DSM labs was definitely one of the highlights of that day.

We then continued our journey towards Lausanne by late afternoon and arrived just in time for warm supper at a typical Swiss restaurant serving Swiss cuisine and cheese fondues. Our evening in Lausanne was memorable, good food and leisure time to discuss the day, science and other important matters in life. We stayed at the Lausanne Guesthouse, an impressive building but unfortunately located directly at the main train station of Lausanne. Some of us might not have had a restful night after all.
The next morning, after a sumptuous breakfast we went to Nestlé Research Center (NRC) – another industrial partner of the GRK 1482. The visit to NRC was split into two sessions. At the morning session, we learned about Nestlé’s global science and research activities and listened to scientific talks. After lunch we had the unique opportunity to see some of the NRC facilities which was quite imposing and at the same time, educative.

Before driving home, we made a quick detour to the food museum “Alimantarium”. The “Alimentarium” offers a vivid discovery of the various aspects of nutrition in a spectacular setting situated on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Given, the schedule of our excursion was rather tight and the long bus journeys which didn’t provide respite either, but all in all we had a good time (as can be seen in the pictures below). We had interesting insights into the world of business and once again a good opportunity to strengthen the team spirit of GRK 1482.
